24/25 - SGSSS Supervisor-led SDS and Open Collaborative Studentship Competitions
Opens 20 Aug 2024 09:00 (GMT)
Deadline 23 Oct 2024 17:00 (GMT)
Description

**Only the first/lead supervisor should submit an application, i.e., on behalf of the supervisory team**

This application is for supervisors looking to apply for ESRC studentship funding via our two collaborative competitions, the Skills Development Scotland Collaborative Studentship Competition and the Open Collaborative Studentship Competition

Each supervisor may submit only one application to each competition. Please note, this applies to any application where you are named as a supervisor, not just first supervisor applications.

Skills Development Scotland (SDS) Collaborative Studentship Competition 2024/25

SDS and the SGSSS will support up to four new PhD studentships in this competition round, for students starting in the 2024/25 academic year. Their research will provide new knowledge and insights to help advance the understanding of key skills issues from a Scottish perspective.

The purpose of the SDS-SGSSS PhD scheme is to engage with the academic community to support the production of new, high-quality research focused on the Scottish labour market. The scheme supports supervisor-led applications, and is designed to:

  • Contribute to the development of a cadre of high-quality academic researchers with a deep knowledge of the Scottish skills landscape
  • Provide SDS with access to high-quality academic research around topics of longer-term interest
  • Increase the range and scope of SDS engagement with academic experts in support of skills policy

Applications should be submitted by prospective first/lead supervisors only. SGSSS supports applications from academics at any stage in their careers, i.e., from early career researchers to more experienced supervisors. What we do ask however, is if a less experienced academic is applying as the first/lead supervisor, that they have one or more members on the supervisory team that are experienced in supervising PhD students to completion, i.e., a supervisor with at least two PhD completions.

To be eligible to be first supervisor in any SGSSS competition, supervisors must meet the criteria listed in our Supervisor Eligibility page.

Second supervisors may work within any of the SGSSS 16 partner HEIs. We encourage applicants to consider co-supervision with different universities across our network where this is beneficial to the studentship. You can find full information about the SGSSS partner universities online here.

For more information on supervisor eligibility, visit this page.

Each year SDS invite proposals based on specific research topics; the 2024/25 topics are:

  1. Exploring transitions to early adulthood using data from Growing Up in Scotland
  2. Quantifying inequality: using large scale data sets and big data to increase understanding of the drivers of inequality
  3. The role of generative artificial intelligence in careers guidance
  4. Skills for the future: upskilling and reskilling as a response to technological disruption and workforce transformation

Please ensure you have read the competition guidance carefully before you apply, as well as to access the application form.

Open Collaborative Studentship Competition 2024/25

In this competition, ‘Collaborative’ is defined broadly to mean a collaboration between a named academic and a non-academic partner in the public, private and third sectors.

Applicants should pay particular attention to the expected financial contributions from collaborative partners and the requirements for student recruitment set out in the guidance.
